Braverman’s dream (& apparently Jean Calder’s)

This blog is a follow up to Anita Patel’s Women’s Place UK : Whitewashing Zionism. When you’ve been friends with someone for 40 years it comes as a shock to realise that they have become an ageing reactionary, an Islamaphobe in particular. All in the name of second wave feminism.

I don’t often write blogs about those I know personally and I’m doing it now because, as the old saying used to go, the personal is political or at least it can be.

Jean was elected to Brighton Borough Council for the Labour Party in 1987. Her husband, Andy Winter was elected in the following year. At that time she was a socialist. I can remember her speaking vehemently in opposition to the Gulf War in 1991 and Tony Benn praising the speech. I accompanied her on a fact finding trip to Northern Ireland. She was a strong supporter of the Republican movement.

Although not actively involved in the Palestine solidarity movement she was always opposed to Zionism and the oppression of the Palestinians.

When six Labour Councillors were suspended at the beginning of the 90’s for refusing to implement the Poll tax she and Andy were amongst them. 30 years though is a long time in politics.

It is true, I believe, that many Jews are profoundly racist when it comes to their attitude to all matters Jewish and Israel. The problem is that this racism only becomes apparent when the justifications they seek become absolutely absurd. It is quite common place amongst Jews to view Jews as exceptional and is occupying an exceptional place in history, rather than accepting that they are just one nation amongst nations and that there is nothing truly exceptional about us or our history. Other, of course, From our literary talent, to write our own history, and to deny that right to others. As such many Jews, including myself, have grown up, believing that Jews and Judaism are exceptionally ethical. For this, we need only to point to our own history and our own historians and philosophers.

But of course, these are not representative of the great majority.

That fact should not be lost on anyone who has been following., The history of Israel and its many many conflicts. I have a close friend who is also Jewish, and who travelled to Rwanda after the genocide to put on a radio play that aim to reconcile Rwandans as part of the peace and reconciliation process.

One would say he is a progressive with a good heart. However, when it comes to Israel, he is incapable of acknowledging the real history or the causes of the oppression of Palestinians.

To the point that he holds racist ideas about. Islam, the Arab world and Palestinians.

He does not realise how reactionary his attitudes really are.

Because his beliefs are shared by millions in Israel, and around the world, it is absolutely impossible to reach him in his delusion.

Political action to bring about an end to the current conflict, and to the general oppression of Palestinians must not waste time, trying to coax Jews into taking a different stance. That is simply a waste of time.

Well finally I now understand Zionism, absolutely superb. Thankyou so much. As a theoretical radical feminist however, your use and condemnation of ‘Western Feminism’ falls into the same trap that you are are exposing/criticising ‘All Jews’ ‘All Western Feminists’ ?
